Wiser Hub connectivity issues

Finally discovered why (for mine anyway)...

I had placed it in a separate VLAN, and my firewall rules were blocking it from pinging the Gateway.

Thanks to stumbling upon https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/comments/19cyc1g/comment/kj2tu65/ I learnt that the Wiser Hub wants to icmp ping the Gateway and 1.1.1.1 every minute, and if it fails 5 times it drops off the WiFi briefly.  Hence every 6 minutes!

Hope this helps someone else.

How I changed the HandSonic HPD-10 internal backup battery

For those who are curious, this is how I changed the internal battery of my Roland Handsonic HPD‑10.  Roland recommends that this is done by the dealer or Roland service.

First I removed the 4 black screws in the rear panel taking care not to lose the washers as well (see image 1).  Then I removed the 12 screws in the bottom panel, as well as the stand mount (see image 2).  Then I carefully removed the back-panel, aided by gravity, but taking particular care with the three bits at the rear end (where the 4 black screws were).

Then I connected the power, turned on the unit, and swapped the battery while it was powered on so that my settings were preserved.

My unit which is nearly 10 years old had been intermittently reporting "battery low!", and when I measured the old CR‑2032 battery it was 2.867V.

Cakewalk instrument definition file for Roland HandSonic HPD-10

I have wanted to do this for some time, but not needed to until recently.

This template version is currently populated with my favourite patches, and I intend to add the other patches as and when needed.  As the HPD-10.ins file is hosted on GitHub others are welcome to contribute.

Roland SVD to Cakewalk INS

Recently bought the Patchman wind instrument patches to try with my TEControl breath controller.  I rediscovered some Perl scripts I made in 2006, to extract patch names from Roland .SVD format  and convert/save to Cakewalk .INS instrument definition file.  (Google Driver folder containing these Perl scripts)

Calendar Features

In the quest to migrate from Palm Calendar, I have opted to use Google Calendar (GC) as my primary calendar, and synchronise my mobile and desktop calendars accordingly.

Converting Palm Calendar to iCal (.ICS) format
The ?second generation of Palm Calendar is stored as an .MDB database on the computer, and can be easily manipulated using Microsoft Access.  It should be a proper relational database (there is a separate Category table), but probably by design it hasn't been done correctly.  The 'Category' field is 'text' which stores a number which relates to a named category in the Category table.  Converting the .MDB file to a standard iCal file has not been difficult, and I made an MS Access program to do so.  Not long after that, Pimlical was released with GC support, and apparently can do the same.  Since I do sympathise with them, I would recommend you try Pimlical.  For direct conversion from Palm to GC, apparently dba2csv does the trick (you would need to check whether it handles the current generation of Palm Calendar).

Synchronising
Thunderbird/Lightning can synchronise with GC via built-in CalDAV, or Provider (add-on).  Pimlical http://www.pimlicosoftware.com/ now supports GC (I have not tried this).  In my opinion GoogaSync http://www.googasync.com/ seems to be currently the most reasonable method to synchronise multiple calendars for Symbian.  I am aware of another service called GooSync that is not too different.  I think Dreamlife is developing their own method of synchronising.

Compare Calendars
Here is a comparison of various calendars, in relation to Google Calendar, Lightning, Palm and Nokia (Symbian):

Currently I am waiting for SBSH calendar to be released for the n97 mini (touch screen UI).  Until then I will put up with the built-in Nokia calendar.

First Time

The fantastic Fiskars garden 'scissors' is the inspiration for the name of this blog.  Like a nice music instrument that you want to keep playing and playing...
